A recap of...

Final Fantasy X

Final Fantasy X is set in the world of Spira, a large landmass divided into three subcontinents and surrounded by tropical islands. The world features diverse climates, from the warm Besaid and Kilika islands to the temperate Mi'ihen Highroad and the icy regions of Macalania and Mt. Gagazet. Unlike the European-inspired settings of earlier Final Fantasy games, Spira draws inspiration from Southeast Asia, reflected in its vegetation, architecture, and names.

Spira's inhabitants include several distinct races. Humans form the majority population, but other groups include the Al Bhed, a technologically advanced subgroup with green, spiral-patterned eyes and a unique language; the Guado, humanoid beings with elongated fingers and arboreal traits; the lion-like Ronso; and the frog-like Hypello. Spira is also home to the unsent, spirits of the dead who remain corporeal due to strong attachments to the living world. Those who do not receive a summoner's sending transform into fiends, the monsters encountered throughout the game. Unique creatures include the massive, elephant-like shoopufs and the emu-like chocobos, the latter being a recurring species in the Final Fantasy series.

The game features seven main playable characters: Tidus, a cheerful blitzball star from the futuristic city of Zanarkand; Yuna, a summoner tasked with defeating Sin, a monstrous, whale-like entity; Kimahri Ronso, a stoic warrior who has protected Yuna since childhood; Wakka, a blitzball player mourning the loss of his brother to Sin; Lulu, a serious black mage and close friend of Yuna; Auron, a seasoned warrior who once guarded both Tidus' and Yuna's fathers; and Rikku, a spirited Al Bhed girl who is Yuna's cousin.

The game begins with Tidus narrating his journey while he and his allies wait near the ruins of Zanarkand. Flashbacks reveal that Tidus was a renowned blitzball player in his technologically advanced home city. During a tournament, Sin attacks Zanarkand, destroying it. Tidus and his mentor Auron, a man not originally from Zanarkand, are pulled into Sin and transported to Spira. Rescued by Al Bhed salvagers led by Rikku, Tidus learns from her that Zanarkand was destroyed a thousand years ago. Sin attacks again, separating Tidus from the Al Bhed and leaving him adrift until he reaches the island of Besaid.

On Besaid, Tidus meets Wakka, the captain of the local blitzball team, and Yuna, a summoner about to embark on a pilgrimage to defeat Sin by obtaining the Final Aeon. Accompanying her are Wakka, Lulu, and Kimahri, her guardians. As the group travels across Spira to collect aeons from temples, Tidus learns of Sin’s devastation and encounters Auron again. Auron reveals that Tidus’ father, Jecht, became Sin after defeating the previous Sin ten years prior. Auron convinces Tidus to join Yuna's guardians, and the party is later joined by Rikku.

Arriving in Guadosalam, the group meets Seymour Guado, the leader of the Guado and a high-ranking clergy member, who proposes to Yuna to bring hope to Spira. In Macalania Temple, they uncover evidence from Seymour's deceased father, Lord Jyscal, revealing that Seymour murdered him and intends to destroy Spira. The group defeats Seymour in battle, but Sin attacks, scattering the party. Tidus, now on the Bikanel Desert island, learns of the Al Bhed's desperate efforts to protect summoners from their inevitable deaths after using the Final Aeon.

The party reunites in Bevelle, where Yuna is forced into a sham marriage with the unsent Seymour, who reveals his plan to become Sin and use its power to bring death to Spira. The group rescues Yuna and defeats Seymour again before escaping to the ruins of Zanarkand. There, Tidus learns the shocking truth: his Zanarkand is an illusion created by fayth, survivors of the original Zanarkand destroyed in a war with Bevelle. These survivors became fayth to summon a dream Zanarkand removed from Spira's reality.

At Zanarkand’s temple, the group meets Yunalesca, the first summoner to defeat Sin, now an unsent. She explains that the Final Aeon is formed by sacrificing someone close to the summoner, and after defeating Sin, the summoner and Final Aeon perish, while Sin is reborn. Rejecting this cycle of futile sacrifice, the group defeats Yunalesca, eliminating the possibility of obtaining the Final Aeon.

The group learns that Yu Yevon, a summoner from Zanarkand and the corrupted deity behind Spira's cycle of Sin, is the true cause of the eternal suffering. They devise a plan to destroy Sin by defeating Yu Yevon directly. Boarding Sin’s body, they confront and defeat Seymour for the last time, sending his spirit to the Farplane. Inside Sin, they encounter Jecht, now Sin’s core. Jecht asks Tidus to defeat him and end the cycle of rebirth. After an emotional confrontation, Jecht transforms into the Final Aeon and is defeated by the party.

With Jecht’s death, the group defeats Yu Yevon by battling aeons possessed by him, eventually destroying him entirely. Yuna performs a sending, releasing Sin, the aeons, and Spira’s fayth, ending Sin’s cycle of rebirth. Auron, revealed to have been unsent, is also sent to the Farplane. With the fayth freed, Dream Zanarkand ceases to exist, and Tidus, a creation of the fayth, vanishes.

In the aftermath, Yuna resolves to help Spira rebuild a world free of Sin. In a post-credits scene, Tidus awakens in an ocean and swims toward the surface, hinting at his survival.
