Final Fantasy Viii

Final Fantasy VIII unfolds in a fantastical world characterized by a mix of modern and futuristic design. The planet features five major continents: Esthar, the largest, dominates the east with advanced technology; Galbadia, the second-largest, lies to the west and hosts many important locations; Trabia, a frozen Arctic region, sits to the north; Balamb, the smallest continent, lies near the center of the map and serves as the game's starting point. The final landmass, ravaged by a past "Lunar Cry"—a catastrophic event where monsters rained down from the moon—is largely barren. The southernmost regions consist of scattered islands and archipelagos, with additional marine structures and off-world areas completing the setting.

The story follows six main protagonists: Squall Leonhart, a reserved and dutiful SeeD mercenary; Rinoa Heartilly, a spirited resistance fighter; Quistis Trepe, a composed and disciplined instructor; Zell Dincht, an energetic martial artist; Selphie Tilmitt, an upbeat pilot; and Irvine Kinneas, a charming sharpshooter. Together, they are embroiled in a conflict against the enigmatic Ultimecia, a sorceress from the future seeking to compress all of time into a singularity. Temporary protagonists include Laguna Loire, Kiros Seagill, and Ward Zabac, whose actions in the past are crucial to the present narrative. Antagonists include Squall’s rival, Seifer Almasy, and the sorceress Edea Kramer, who is revealed to be an unwilling host for Ultimecia.

The story begins with Squall and Seifer sparring during training at Balamb Garden, leaving each other with matching scars. Shortly after, Galbadia invades the Dollet Dukedom, prompting SeeD to deploy its cadets, including Squall, Seifer, Zell, and Selphie, to halt the assault. Squall, Zell, and Selphie successfully complete their mission, earning their SeeD status, while Seifer is reprimanded for disobedience. During the graduation celebration, Squall meets Rinoa, whose personality starkly contrasts his own.

Their next mission leads them to assist Rinoa's resistance group in Timber, where they discover that Galbadia's aggression stems from the influence of Sorceress Edea. Under orders, Squall and his team—now joined by Rinoa, Quistis, and Irvine—attempt to assassinate Edea. However, the mission fails when Edea proves immune to their attack and stabs Squall with an ice shard. The party is captured, and Seifer, now aligned with Edea, becomes her loyal enforcer.

After escaping imprisonment, the party learns of Edea's plans to launch a missile strike on Trabia Garden. Selphie leads an effort to delay the attack, while Squall's group activates Balamb Garden's mobile functions to evade destruction. The Garden crashes into the town of Fishermans’ Horizon, where it undergoes repairs. Galbadia’s forces arrive in pursuit of Ellone, a girl capable of projecting consciousnesses into the past. Ellone reveals she has been attempting to alter history by sending Squall and his team into flashbacks centered on Laguna, a former Galbadian soldier who became Esthar’s leader after a series of fateful events.

Meanwhile, Squall grapples with his growing responsibilities as SeeD's leader and his feelings for Rinoa. The group discovers they were all raised in an orphanage run by Edea but had forgotten due to amnesia caused by their use of Guardian Forces (GF). Edea, who with her husband Cid founded the Gardens to combat rogue sorceresses, was unwillingly possessed by Ultimecia. After defeating Edea, Ultimecia transfers her powers to Rinoa, placing her in a coma. Determined to save her, Squall seeks Ellone’s help in Esthar.

While Rinoa recovers in Esthar’s space station, Ultimecia uses her to release Sorceress Adel, imprisoned in orbit. A massive Lunar Cry brings Adel’s containment pod to the planet’s surface, and Ultimecia abandons Rinoa in space. Squall rescues her using the Ragnarok spaceship, and they share a tender moment before returning to the planet. The party learns from Esthar’s president, Laguna, that they must allow Ultimecia to cast time compression so that they can confront her in her era.

At the Lunatic Pandora facility, the party defeats Seifer, rescues Ellone, and eliminates Adel. Ultimecia possesses Rinoa to initiate time compression, but Ellone’s powers send Squall’s team into the future to confront her. In a climactic battle, Ultimecia is defeated, and time begins to unravel. Squall, lost in the void between eras, witnesses Ultimecia pass her powers to a younger Edea, ensuring the cyclical nature of the conflict.

Rinoa finds Squall and brings him back to their restored timeline. Peace returns: Seifer reunites with his friends, Laguna visits Raine's grave, and SeeD celebrates their victory. The game concludes with Squall and Rinoa sharing a kiss under the stars, symbolizing hope for the future.
